Anonymous party of 8 had The steamers of shrimp and clams,
Awesome. Fish was huge. and rated the food excellent because,
"My group loved the steamers and fish. The portions were big."
and writs on September 7, 2009, "It was a great time for the
adults and kids. We all enjoyed the Steamers and fish. Shrimp
was the best and I was surprised about the full bar. Kids had
burgers and hotdogs and enjoyed watching the fish and birds from
the table. Service was very good. I enjoyed the conversation
with Bryan, he should be a tour guide. He was very informative.
We left a nice tip."

Cathy party of 2 had dinner at Old Salty Dog and rated the
grouper excellent because, "Fresh, cooked perfectly, light and
crisp and served hot" and writs on March 20, 2008, "We visited
the Salty dog again in May of 2007. We go every year when we
vacation in Sarasota. We sat on the deck, as we always do,
watching the shoppers and locals walk by. There always seems to
be tropical birds walking near by, which I find very authentic
to the "key" atmosphere. Our waitress was fun and playful, with
prompt service and a nice smile. We are in love with their
Grouper Nuggets, and as usual on this visit they were delicious.
Fresh Grouper cubes, battered and cooked perfectly, light and
crisp. We had a few beers, Grouper, fries, and salad and the
bill was $28.00 for two. Can't beat this place!"

Jon Wish party of 5 had Blackened Shrimp, crab cake sandwich,
dog bites and rated the food good because, "good, but portion vs
price was off the wall." and writes on December 3, 2007,
"Service: Fair. We were seated quickly and food timing after
order was OK. After that service was very slow. The waitress
never came back and asked once how the food was. Which lead to
the main issue. I ordered a "shrimp dinner (blackened)" under
specialties section which I figured would be a decent sized meal
for $15. I received 7 shrimp on a skewer with coleslaw and
fries. The shrimp was very good, but hardly qualified as even an
appetizer. I went ahead and ate the shrimp since our waitress
was not around. (Why not eat it? I figure i'd ask for a discount
later.) Well, after finishing our meal with my wife and
children, I went and found the waitress and asked her (nicely w/
a smile) for a discount because of the rather small food
portion. She referred me to someone else, in which I spoke to
again nicely, but she said NO with a smile and did apologize,
and then asked me what I drank. Huh? Once I left, I told my wife
what she said, and she said maybe the food is more for "bar
snacks". So, I totally disagree with The Old Salty Dog's
statement of "to create a fun family environment that is
appealing to people from all walks of life." My perception: If
you want beer and bar snacks, go there. If you want a family
restaurant, go somewhere else. The owner may say the same
thing."

Anonymous party of 3 had French Fries, English Fish and Chips,
Grouper Sandwich and rated the food excellent because, "We have
been to Sarasota several times in the last few years and I
always insist that we eat at Old Salty Dog at least 3 times."
and writes on June 22, 2006, "We have been to Sarasota several
times in the last few years and I always insist that we eat at
Old Salty Dog at least 3 times.
We have sometimes had to wait because there hasn't been a table
free, but then we have always had a drink at the bar. However,
almost every time we have been there, we have been seated
quickly by a friendly server, who has taken our food and drinks
order quickly.
We have never had to wait long for the food and it has always
been superb. This visit was no exception. My mom had the Grouper
sandwich with fries and slaw, my dad had the English Fish and
Chips - unfortunately they don't do the large portion any more -
and I, because I am a fussy eater, had a portion of French
Fries. I was surprised by the size of the portion of fries. I
thought that it would be really small, but, even though it
wasn't massive, it was enough.
We will definitely be coming back."

Anonymous rated the food excellent because, "It was served hot
and tasted delicious Their Grouper Sandwiches are the best." and
writes on June 24, 2004: "I have visited the Old Salty Dog
Restaurants on Siesta Key and by Longboat Key many times. On
this Particular occasion my family took me to the Siesta key
location to celebrate my birthday. we had such a great time I
felt that I had to let people know.
We where greeted at the door by a nice man that asked our
seating preference and had us seated promptly. No sooner than we
had sat down a friendly Waitress by the name of Denise told us
of their drink specials and took our order.
The drinks arrived promptly and my wife had their drink special
a Mango Daiquiri served with a slice of fresh mango. She loved
it and it was a great presentation.
The four of us then ordered our meals and enjoyed our drinks.
The restaurant has been recently remodeled and the improvements
are excellent. It has lost a little of its old charm but the
improved comfort more than makes up for that.
Our meals where served in a timely fashion. I had ordered the
grouper Sandwich which is my favorite item on their menu. I had
it lightly blackened
and is was served cooked to perfection. They really give a large
portion of fish on their sandwiches enough to satisfy even my
appetite. My wife had the Surf and Turf dinner which at the dog
is battered shrimp with a steak. It has got to be the best deal
in town for a steak dinner at less than $16. My brother in-law
had the Salty dog and fries which is a beer battered hot dog and
he called it "Snacking Heaven", his wife had the fish and chips
that looked great as it was cooked in the restaurants own beer
batter and not in that pre battered mush that you see in so many
restaurants.
All through our meal we had great attendance from Denise that
helped make this special dining experience into a Great one.
I am not one for fancy formal places to eat but the dog
definitely delivers the "Good food and Good times" that so many
of the large chains advertise. Overall the place is clean and
comfortable with a nice relaxed feel. The staff are real and
don't have that phony corporate read from a script table side
manor.
Thanks again to the Old Salty Dog restaurant and staff for
making my birthday special this year."
Tim & Dianna Gaddis visited the Old Salty Dog on 6/25/03 and
ordered beer battered hot dogs, kids meals and rated the
food very good because, "Best beer battered hot dogs I have ever
had." And they write, "My husband and I visit my Dad in Sarasota
every year in June or July. And one of our favorite places to
have lunch is at The Old Salty Dog. It's a small place, you have
the choice to eat your meal inside or out side on their covered
patio. The employee's are always so nice and helpful. I have the
beer battered hot dogs which are so big that my husband usually
has to help me eat it all. The side dishes are fresh and very
good. The menu describes all the dishes. My husband always has
their fresh fish of the day. He loves it. We spend about 9 days
in Sarasota each year and we eat at The Old Salty Dog at least 3
times during our visit. We highly recommend you give it a try.
You will not be disappointed. Enjoy!!" |
