Dry Dock Longboat Key Restaurant Review

Review - 1=Excellent - 2=Very Good - 3=Good 4=Fair 5=Poor

Britt Kimel party of 5 ordered shrimp and crab, chicken pasta, fried shrimp and scallops. and rated the food fair because, "While it tasted very good, it came out slow and the presentation wasn't what my party members ordered." and writes on July 9, 2006, "This restaurant has been one of my family's favorite places to eat. The cleanliness, decor, and view is great. Our most recent visit was disappointing, however. Our order was taken promptly and our salads came out in a timely manner. One of our party ordered a martini and it was not acceptable. He sent it back and the replacement drink was not much better and he didn't finish it. In the meantime, we noticed other tables who ordered after us begin to receive their food. Our food took about 15 minutes too long to be prepared.
When the food came out, they had the side items not paired with the correct entrees. One of our party had asked for rice and received mashed potatoes. She received her replacement rice several minutes after she had finished her meal. Also compounding our displeasure, we were told that the vegetable of the night was green beans- no substitutions allowed. When our food came out, the vegetable supplied was carrots. The carrots appeared to be overcooked and dry. We found out later that they had asparagus they "wouldn't" use until the carrots ran out.
My grilled shrimp and crab had very good flavor. I would order it again, but I was disappointed in the presentation. The chicken pasta was excellent that my daughter ate. Another in my party was very happy with her fried shrimp and scallops. The servings of the entrees themselves provided good value, the problem though, was that the problems mentioned above made this the worst experience I have had in the numerous times I have eaten here.
I rate the service fair at best as our server was pleasant and friendly. She dropped the ball by not keeping us informed as to the status of our food, informing us that the vegetable of the day had changed, and she did not check back on us after we received our food. I would rate the food as fair due to the problems we had with the side items. The core entrées were very good.
In closing, this experience has caused me to take Dry Dock off my must visit list when I vacation in Sarasota. In the future, I plan to visit Dry Dock again, but if I had a similar experience I would cross it off my list.

Karin ordered Grouper, Shrimp, Mahi with Linguini and Tomato Basil sauce, Calamari and rated the food excellent because, "It was seasoned perfectly with nice portions." and writes on July 2, 2006, "In addition to the above, I rated the food excellent because this is only the second restaurant I've eaten at where the food arrives at your table consistently HOT! Great atmosphere and very friendly service. The waiters/waitresses always treat us like "our wish is their command"

Bev Adams rated the food excellent because, "Excellent value for money, lots of it, beautifully presented and tasty" and writes on October 19, 2004, "We have been going to this restaurant on a regular basis for five years and never once have we had cause to complain. The service is excellent and friendly. The restaurant itself is very pleasing to the eye on a boating theme and always clean. there is a good variety of dishes on the menu catering for adults and children and they are always plentiful and cleanly presented, as well as being tasty. The view over the bay of Sarasota is nice to look at, especially from upstairs (which we did on this particular visit however we sat outside on the dock whilst waiting for our table which again was very pleasant."

Rani Quirk rated the food excellent because, "the make a great tasting pasta primavera! Great for families." And writes on June 20, 2004, "We always visit the Dry Dock when we visit our parents because it is always reliable. In April 2004, we had two families and my parents--a wide variety of tastes! The kids get yummy chicken fingers and I always get their pasta primavera, with a little of their delicious marinara sauce on the side. Great food, good for all ages and the location is beautiful. The kids love looking at the pelicans and the boats. Get there real early in season!"

Susi Wilkinson ordered Seafood Scallops and Grouper and rated the food excellent because, "everything was cooked the way we like it" and writes on July 28, 2004: "My husband and I really like the Dry Dock Waterfront Grill for the ambiance and good food. Last June (2004) we ate there twice (once on Father's Day, since this is my husband's favorite Sarasota area restaurant). He ordered scallops, which were tender and juicy, and I had grouper, which was perfectly grilled with a wonderful basil sauce. The staff treated our son (who is two) wonderfully, bringing extra crackers quickly and keeping hot things away from small hands.
We have enjoyed Dry Dock many times in the last six years (on our yearly "beach week" and wanted to let you know that it is a wonderful gem on the Sarasota coast."
